The magpie is Korea's bird of good news, so a magpie dream is read as a welcome guest, happy news, a promotion or even a pregnancy. Nearly every magpie scene in Korean dream books is lucky.
Ask a Korean what it means when a magpie chatters outside the window in the morning, and you’ll probably get the same answer from three generations: someone you’re happy to see is coming today.
That belief carries straight into dreams. The magpie, 까치 (kkachi), is Korea’s bird of good news, and a magpie dream is one of the most cheerful dreams in Korean folklore. It’s read as welcome visitors, happy news, a promotion, a wedding or a baby. Korean dream books have very little bad to say about it.
These are traditional readings, not predictions, but this one is a pleasant one to look up.
Korea’s bird of good news
Korea’s encyclopedia of national culture describes the magpie as one of the wild birds Koreans have felt closest to since ancient times, the bird that announces welcome people and news. It records the saying that “if a magpie calls in the morning, someone welcome will visit that house,” along with the belief, once found across the country, that killing a magpie is a sin.
The magpie runs all through Korean stories:
- The bridge of magpies and crows. On Chilseok, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, magpies and crows build a bridge across the Milky Way, 오작교 (Ojakgyo), so the herdsman and the weaver girl can meet for their one night a year. The encyclopedia passes on the old story that magpies look bald after Chilseok from carrying stones on their heads.
- The grateful magpie. In a folktale told all over Korea, a magpie saves the man who rescued it by ringing a temple bell with its own head, giving its life to repay him.
- The baby-tooth song. Children once tossed a lost tooth onto the roof and sang, “Magpie, magpie, take my old tooth and give me a new one.”
The magpie also shares the canvas with the tiger in Korean folk paintings, and the pair has found new fans worldwide through the 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
What happened in your dream?
Here’s how the common magpie scenes are read.
| In your dream | Common Korean reading | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| A magpie flies into your room | A new family member, or good news by mail or phone | Good omen |
| A magpie calls from your roof | An honored guest, a child coming home from far away, or a celebration | Good omen |
| A magpie sings in a tree | Good news from far away, or a marriage or pregnancy | Good omen |
| A baby magpie slips under your skirt | A sign of pregnancy | Good omen |
| A magpie sits on your shoulder | A surprise promotion that makes you the star of the office | Good omen |
| Several magpies perch on a branch | Meeting people who will help you | Good omen |
| A magpie drops seeds on a field | An investment paying off, a good harvest or unexpected money | Good omen |
| A magpie builds a nest | Success in what you’re doing; marriage or a growing business | Good omen |
| A flock of magpies flies away | Luck in everything and freedom from long-running worries | Good omen |
| A magpie turns into a phoenix | An ordinary person rising to fame after hardship | Good omen |
The rule here is short: a magpie coming toward you, calling to you or settling near you is good news.
A magpie calling
This is the heart of magpie dreams, and it comes straight from the morning saying. A magpie calling from your roof is read as an honored guest arriving, a child who lives far away coming home, or a happy event in the family. The 꿈해몽위키 dream site reads a magpie singing in a tree the same way, as good news from afar or a welcome visitor, and adds marriage or pregnancy to the list.
A magpie in the house
A magpie flying into your room is read as welcoming a new family member, which can mean a marriage, a baby or someone joining the household. It can also mean good news arriving by letter or phone.
Magpie taemong
The magpie is a gentle taemong (pregnancy dream) bird. The clearest scene in Korean dream readings is a baby magpie slipping under your skirt, which is read as a sign of pregnancy. A magpie flying into your room or singing in a tree can also be read as a new family member on the way.
Many people search for magpie taemong “by sex.” Some older taemong lists group small birds with daughters, but treat that as folklore, not fact. Korea’s encyclopedia notes that these boy and girl symbols vary from region to region.
Who dreamed it?
- At work: a magpie on your shoulder is told as a surprise promotion.
- Running a business: a magpie dropping seeds is told as an investment that pays off.
- Single: a magpie building a nest is told as a wedding on the horizon.
- Pregnant or trying: a baby magpie or a magpie flying into your room is told as a taemong.
Korea vs the West
In Britain and parts of Europe the magpie has a mixed reputation. There’s the counting rhyme “one for sorrow, two for joy,” and the idea of the magpie as a thief of shiny things. Korea has none of that gloom. Here the magpie is the bird of welcome guests and good news, and its dream readings follow suit.
Questions people ask
Is a magpie dream good luck in Korea? Yes. It’s one of the most consistently lucky bird dreams, read as good news, visitors, promotion or a new family member.
What does it mean when a magpie sings in my dream? Good news or a welcome guest is on the way, just like the morning saying.
Is a magpie dream a taemong? It can be. A baby magpie slipping under your clothes, or a magpie flying into your room, is read as a pregnancy sign.
Are there any bad magpie dreams? The Korean sources used here don’t list any. The magpie’s reputation is so good that even its dream readings are almost all happy.
Does a magpie dream predict good news? No dream can promise that. These are traditional readings, not predictions, and the magpie is simply Korean folklore’s favorite messenger of hope.
